While I now think that it's better to just let the DNS fail while reinventing it from the edge. If one does want to try to fix it it'simportant to recognize that many, if not the vast majority, of the problems
cited in the report stem from the semantic burden we've put on the DNS rather than the basic architecture. The architecture itself has held up rather well.Yet I didn't see any mention of the point in the report (though I may have
missed it). It seems to be an attempt to make the unworkable workableThe squabble over .XXX is another reminder of the fallacy of imbuing bits
with intrinsic meaning. -----Original Message----- From: David Farber [mailto:dave () farber net] Sent: Tuesday, August 16, 2005 12:56 To: Ip Ip Subject: [IP] WSIS, DNS, WGIG, etc Begin forwarded message: From: "Brownstein, Charles" <CBrownstein () nas edu> Date: August 16, 2005 12:27:12 PM EDT To: dave () farber net Subject: WSIS, DNS, WGIG, etc Dave, As you have announced, CSTB has a report available online about the "Internet Governance" issues surrounding the DNS. It is available for free to anyone who wants to download it (or one can purchase the book version). Unlike anything else available on the topic, it provides a compendium of historical information, technical details, and reasoned analysis about alternative courses of policy by a very broad group of experts representing and considering a wide range of viewpoints. They agreed on some things and not on others- and the report details why. Early reader feedback has encouraged us to get the word out to more folks who are attending to the recent WGIG report and the upcoming WISIS deliberations. We have created a "summary brochure" highlighting the report contents and taking one to the download site. It is at: http://www.cstb.org/dns/signpost.html This is to ask anyone who has an interest to take a look and also to spread the word by asking that this link be added to any other sites where interested readers may be. We are also interested in reader reactions and in knowing who has linked to the site. Best, Chuck Charles N.
