The day after 7/7, all ID's were checked getting on to trains in DC, by two people, while several other Amtrak employees stood around and watched and the crowd backed up. A week later, they'd relaxed and the conductors were announcing that they were doing the following random check: when the trip started, the conductor thought of a number between 1 and 10 and if your ticket number ended with that unannounced digit, you got carded.
