It appears to have begun with Sinclair Broadcasting Corp.'s six ABC affiliates issuing statement they will not broadcast the film, but fill in local programming, giving as the reason fear of being fined by the FCC for indecency. Now station after station is folding. As of 1:30 ET, at least 20 ABC affiliates have backed away. Typical of statements issued this afternoon: "...FCC actions and last week's re-election of President Bush as reasons for dropping [Saving Private Ryan]." "Saving Private Ryan" has been broadcast on TV before, typically in prime viewing hours. Now, after the election, there is fear the FCC will act to fine stations that broadcast it? That's what the stations say. Groups that criticize TV for indecency and violence are saying there is no reason not to air the film. KWQC-TV in Iowa will replace the film with "Return to Mayberry." I ask, where are we going?
