202-418-1408 FCC TO HOLD GLOBAL ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON INTERNET-PROTOCOL BASED SERVICES Discussion with International Experts Regarding Global Migration to Internet-Protocol (IP) Based Services Washington, D.C. On Friday, July 30, 2004, the FCCs Internet Policy Working Group (IPWG) will hold a roundtable discussion to address international issues associated with the migration of communications services and applications to IP-based technologies. The event, which is open to the public, will be held at FCC Headquarters, 445 12th Street, SW, Washington, D.C. from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Commission meeting room. The roundtable will include government representatives, members of U.S. and international industry, and FCC staff. Countries around the world are grappling with the same challenges as the United States as technological advances remove distinctions between telecommunication services. In a global environment where different platforms are used to provide functionally equivalent services, distinct regulatory categories based upon particular types of services are blurring, thereby creating pressures on legacy industry structures, revenue flows, and investment. (This roundtable discussion will not address Domain Name System issues.) Background on FCC Internet Policy Working Group: The FCC Internet Policy Working Group was created by Chairman Michael K. Powell to assist the Commission in identifying, evaluating and addressing policy issues that will arise as more services move to Internet-based platforms. The cross-Bureau and multi-disciplinary Working Group is directed by a steering committee comprised of senior management and staff from several Commission Bureaus and Offices, and is staffed as needed by attorneys, engineers and economists from across the Commission. This Working Group also interacts with key constituencies including state regulators, consumer groups and public safety organizations. For additional information on the Working Group, please visit the Internet Policy Working Group website at: www.fcc.gov/ipwg.
