It's required by law. Some earlier models also have ODB IIconnectors. My own questions to that author:Did you know that, prior to 1996, many American cars had non-standardizeddata ports?Did you know that the standard data port connector was imposed, by law, on the country by liberal activists in the EPA who were concerned about airpollution? See <http://www.obdii.com/background.html#Where>.Did you know that, although ODB II is supposed to be standard, many of the variables are unique to specific manufacturers, and you need to buy multiple software packages to be able to properly interpret the data for cars frommultiple manufacturers?Did you know that if you have an ODB II port on your car, you can hook a PCup to it and read and reset trouble codes (MIL)?Did you know that the ODB II port is a nice tool for tuning engines? (Beatsa tach!)Did you know that the ODB II connector sucks and that a USB port connectorwould probably be a better idea? Chuck Jackson
