Illinois Is Poised to Allow SBC Raise Its Prices Against Competitors to
Use Its Local Lines
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois is poised to give a financial boost
to SBC Communications Inc. by raising the rates the phone company can
charge competitors to use its local lines.
The Illinois Senate voted 30-24 on Friday to approve the phone-rates
bill, and Gov. Rod Blagojevich promised to sign it into law, saying it
will help protect the jobs of SBC's 21,000 Illinois employees. SBC had
teamed with labor unions to sell the measure as a jobs bill.
