And not just in NYC.

With the collapse of telecom, I was made redundant from a
research/consultancy group. 15 months later - despite an eighteen year IT career building applications and networks; despite retraining to Java, XML, Web Services, and other tech; despite a deep understanding of market and economic strategy in telecom; despite authoring five major telecom reports, 3 telecom/net/converged industry models, and having consulted all over the
world - including presenting to a group including yourself at the FCC;
despite depth and breadth of technology and commercial awareness, and
despite a willingness to commute anywhere at anytime - I still have no job. I could get work as a janitor, I suppose, but then I couldn't pay my living
expenses and would run the risk of bankruptcy.

This is not meant to be a sob-story, nor am I feeling sorry for myself. If
anything, I feel sorry for those who are so entrenched in 'old-school'
mechanisms that they have cut their workforce, cut their offerings, cut
their service, and absolutely destroyed their ability to innovate.

Funnily enough, I believe I've spoken with Brent before now - on the Telcom
Dark Ages list. How accurate we were.....

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but surely there are more valuable exercises on the agenda than starting a war. How about starting initiatives that utilise the intellectual and social capital of those who might provide platforms of understanding that could avoid such foolishness in the future?

Dave,

I was formally employed by Alcatel as a designer on the Fiber-to-the-User system. I am now working for Meier&Frank (Robinson-May Co.) part time. It
sounds like this jaitor in a LD CO is doing better than I.

Boy, now here's a really under-employed guy! You ever run
into a guy this aware of telecom economics and technical
issues who was cleaning the offices, hallways, and bathrooms
in Holmdel? This message smells like a put-on to me ...

I suggest that you talk with people in the NYC area who have been
unemployed
for 6 - 9 months and still have no hope of a job. Unemployment runs out
and
besides is hard to live on and eventually you end up looking for some way
to
eat.

It may or may not be real but it is believable to me.
