Dave ...

I have to tell you ... as a New York resident, I applaud this ban
wholeheartedly. There is absolutely nothing more annoying than having a
beautiful musical passage, or spoken word, ruined by the sound of someone's
cell phone ringing.

Yes, but the new law bans even phones that vibrate. This effectively
means that doctors on call can no longer go to the theater or movies,
at least not without breaking the law. Do you think that is
reasonable?

Recently, I was at a restaurant in New York with a friend of mine
who's a doctor. He was on call at the time, and while we were eating
he received a call informing him of an emergency. The staff of the
restaurant indignantly started to try to stop him from speaking on the
phone since the restaurant had a "no phones" policy. I started
indignantly explaining to the waiter that human lives were more
important than their annoyance. Not all cell phone calls are trivial,
but it appears that people have lost their ability to distinguish what
is and is not important enough to merit a law.

Perry
