Subject: RE: [IP] more^2 on Airline war use

I called American Airlines this morning after seeing the note. A spokesman
there confirmed, in part, the original story that prompted your posting to
IP, however, the spokesman denied that AA had sent any such e-mail to its
employees saying that Federal government had asked them to "make at least 10
jets along with crew available starting March 1 for 'war use.'"

However the AA spokesman did confirm that the Pentagon had initiated "phase
one" of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet. AA has committed FIVE planes to the
effort, the spokesman said.

All told eleven airlines were called into action. Those are: American
Airlines, American Trans Air, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaiian
Airlines, North American Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Omni Air
International, United Airlines, US Airways and World Airways.

The CARF began flying on Monday, the Pentagon said.

According to the Air Mobility Command there are three stages of incremental
activation allow for tailoring an airlift force suitable for the contingency
at hand. Stage I is for minor regional crises, Stage II would be used for a
major theater war, and Stage III for periods of national mobilization.
