The T. Matsumoto work was presented in Yokohama 18 October 2000 at the Counterfeit Protection Japan Conference. Major results of the paper were presented in Japanese in the Technical report of IEICE, ISEC2000-45/IPSJ SIG Notes, 2000-CSEC-10-23, July 25, 2000. The cited reference (Optical Security and Counterfeit Deterrence Techniques IV, Rudolf L. van Renesse, Editor, Proceedings of SPIE Vol 4677 (2002) San Jose CA, pp 275-289) is a further refinement and extension of the October 2000 paper. Both are impressive demonstrations of the vulnerability of finger print systems to simulation. The latter paper closes with this declaration: "We would like to stress that this study intends to encourage the suppliers and users of fingerprint systems to reconsider security of their systems, not to criticize libelously fingerprint systems for their security, and not to compare their performance."
