Hi Dave: Maybe it is time to dredge up the MsgGroup Flame Fest of 1979 that was triggered when you linked the CMU Flame Fest regarding the default settings of the Finger Command into the Global MsgGroup discussion.

Here is the header of your intro message (MSGGROUP# 794)
in <http://www.tcm.org/msggroup> in the file for Msgs# 701-800.
The Flame Fest lasted for several hundred messages as it gradually
faded out. The issues ranged over the full extent of rights to
know where other people are and rights to be shielded from other
people's knowing where you are, etc, et al...

It was some time before this flame fest that I turned off "linking"
(the earliest version of IM) on my TOPS-10 ARPANET user account so
as to not be bothered by other users jumping into the middle of my
work on a TI-735!

I have never had any interest in IM since then;-)...
If you want my attention, just send me a regular message;-)...

On the other hand, some years before that, I had met our good friend Ole Jacobsen through a link, when he was a High School Student in Norway and saw my Norwegian name with Finger while logged in on SRI-KA while he was working at some Norwegian Defense establishment. I still have the TI Terminal printout of our "meeting" somewhere in a file folder.

I have been wondering how long it would take for that CMU discussion to repeat itself. I suppose it belongs in the Computer Museum;-)...

Cheers...\Stef

When I first saw this set of messages I felt they were of strong
interest to the message group community and asked that they be
"desensitized" by removing certain names and internal refernces.
