The Flame Fest lasted for several hundred messages as it gradually faded out. The issues ranged over the full extent of rights to know where other people are and rights to be shielded from other people's knowing where you are, etc, et al... It was some time before this flame fest that I turned off "linking" (the earliest version of IM) on my TOPS-10 ARPANET user account so as to not be bothered by other users jumping into the middle of my work on a TI-735! I have never had any interest in IM since then;-)... If you want my attention, just send me a regular message;-)...On the other hand, some years before that, I had met our good friend Ole Jacobsen through a link, when he was a High School Student in Norway and saw my Norwegian name with Finger while logged in on SRI-KA while he was working at some Norwegian Defense establishment. I still have the TI Terminal printout of our "meeting" somewhere in a file folder.I have been wondering how long it would take for that CMU discussion to repeat itself. I suppose it belongs in the Computer Museum;-)...Cheers...\Stef ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 23-FEB-79 22:59:18-PST,11166;000000000001 Mail-from: USC-ISI rcvd at 23-FEB-79 0547-PST Date: 23 FEB 1979 0547-PST Sender: FARBER at USC-ISI Subject: MSGGROUP# 794 The CMU Finger program and privacy ...
