Broadband networks have built the necessary infrastructure and now are waiting for the expected traffic. Many carriers currently use only a fraction of their network capacity, prompting them to look for a "killer app" that will drive users to subscribe to their services. Cincinnati-based Broadwing has signed with game maker Media Station to roll out a nationwide system where consumers can purchase games for download onto their hard drives. Broadwing has also made a deal with New Millennium Entertainment to carry that company's new multiplayer online game, which would be able to host 100,000 simultaneous users. Some networks are looking at digital movies and programs created for television to take up the slack in capacity. Vyvx Broadband Media has signed with several companies to broadcast their shows digitally. Videoconferencing has also been made accessible and much cheaper through new technology--prices for systems have dropped from around $100,000 to less than $18,000. (Wall Street Journal, 14 June 2001)
