Progressive Casualty Insurance— The nation's fourth-largest automobile
insurance company has established the Autograph program, which taps into
Global Positioning System technology to track drivers' usage and then
calculate insurance premiums based on that usage. The Autograph system uses
a videotape-size box installed in a vehicle to track data about its speed,
mileage, and other usage metrics. Autograph periodically transmits the data
to Progressive via cellular frequencies. In a test, the program saved
Houston drivers an average of 25% on their insurance premiums, and some
drivers saved as much as 50%, Progressive says. Now, as it moves the
Autograph effort into its next phase, Progressive faces several challenges,
including addressing privacy issues and winning approval from state
insurance commissions across the U.S.
