IBM will release its latest digital rights management
technology, which IBM's Scott Burnett says is among the most
secure technologies currently available. The technology is
designed to help record labels, movie studios, and other
copyright owners protect their media property while still serving
customers through online peer-to-peer networks such as Napster or
Gnutella. IBM's software allows an MP3 file to be freely e-mailed
or copied, but only once, allowing consumers the opportunity to
sample music for free but still requiring them to purchase the
material if they want to access it repeatedly. IBM's technology
also includes plug-ins to enable direct sales and allows for
copyright owners to assign different levels of protection based
on geographic region. (Cnet, 21 January 2001)
