Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2001 17:15:13 -0700 (MST) From: Joel M Snyder <Joel.Snyder () Opus1 COM> Subject: Voicestream GSM Internet->to->SMS is off-the-air To: dave () farber net Comments: Telecommunications and Information Technology Services The gateway between Voicestream's GSM network and the Internet disappeared sometime over the weekend. Voicestream subscribers accustomed to using <phone-number>@voicestream.net to receive SMS messages haven't been able to do so all weekend. Voicestream customer service won't admit to the problem, but a quick look at the InterNIC domain database tells the story: it looks as if the domain name disappeared (probably for non-payment or some other administrative faux pas) and was hurriedly (and incorrectly) put back on the 29th. And folks wonder why GSM services are not better accepted in the US? Probably because the GSM providers in the US haven't proven themselves competent at running their own networks.
