One technology currently being examined is ultra wide band (UWB) radio, which sends individual pulses instead of continuous signals, and at a power level close to that of electrical noise. The advantage of continuous signals is that they are relatively easy to detect, whereas picking a single pulse of radio energy out of the background is very difficult ­ unless it is so powerful as to swamp everything else.
