Hong Kong, U.K. mull licensing WLAN spectrum
By Anne Young, Total Telecom

The Hong Kong regulator has ruled in the possibility of licensing wireless
LAN frequencies if the currently unlicensed bands are used to provide public
services.

The U.K.-based Radiocommunications Agency is also carrying out consultation
on the use of license-exempt spectrum for commercial services.

Such a move could have implications for mobile operators that plan to roll
out third-generation mobile services: WLAN technology has increasingly been
seen as a possible threat to the growth of 3G, although in some cases it is
viewed as a complementary technology.
