Fossett still making headway (19:00 UTC)

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, AUGUST 15, 2 P.M. CDT (19:00 UTC) -- Balloonist Steve
Fossett has indicated he was able to sleep today and will not need to lower
his altitude to gain further rest. Earlier, Fossett planned to fly at lower
altitudes in order to sleep without his oxygen mask. That strategy would
have cut his speed in half.

Solo Spirit is 253 miles (407 km) from the coast of Chile. The team at
Mission Control says Solo Spirit will pass over the coast late this evening
CDT. The balloon's southeasterly track will take it over the Andes at an
altitude of at least 27,000 feet.

Once past the mountain range, Solo Spirit will drop down to 13,000 or 15,000
feet. Not only will Fossett be able to breathe without an oxygen mask at the
lower levels, but also the winds will be more advantageous at that point
than they would be at higher altitudes, said Bob Rice, chief meteorologist
at Mission Control at Washington University in St. Louis.

Solo Spirit is traveling at 25 miles (40 km) per hour at 26,000 feet (7,924
m). Fossett is almost 11 days into his solo flight around the world. Fossett
will reach the halfway point in his trip sometime Thursday afternoon CDT.
