Several years ago, the New York Times (NYT), Time magazine, Newsday, The
Atlantic Monthly, and a number of other publishers began to repost their old
content onto their web sites. For example, the NYT posted articles from
their New York Times Magazine.

The original authors of those articles pointed out that their contracts were
specifically for a single use and the NYT did not have the right to reprint
and they should pay reprint fees. The NYT was selling the articles for $2-$3
but they were not giving any of the money to the authors.

This was a copyright issue and it went to federal court. The National
Writers Union (NWU at www.nwu.org) sued New York Times (NYT at
www.nytimes.com), Time magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, and others. The case
has been going on for several years.

The NYT argued in court that they had the right to ignore copyright law.
They continued to sell the articles, collect the money, and keep the money,
without paying the authors.

This weekend, the US appeals court decided in the favor of the NWU. They won
against practically the entire East Coast publishing industry. This is a
landmark decision that will have a huge impact on web content and online
publishing.

This means that if YOU have written newspaper articls, magazine storie, or
books and if publishers have taken that content onto their web sites (either
for free or for profit,) they owe you royalties. If this applies to you,
contact the NWU at www.nwu.org. It has a project to help writers collect
their royalties.
