Has Caused Registration Delays By NICK WINGFIELD THE WALL STREET JOURNAL INTERACTIVE EDITION Network Solutions Inc., the largest registrar of cyberspace "domain" names, said that registrations for new Internet addresses have been significantly delayed by two factors: an e-mail attack and record business. People who attempt to register a new domain name are currently receiving confirmation of their requests within 24 to 48 hours, instead of normal processing time of 20 minutes, according to Chris Clough, a spokesman for the Herndon, Va., company. One cause of the slowdown, Mr. Clough said, is a flood of junk e-mail that's bogged down Network Solutions' registration servers since the first of the year. The e-mail messages are coming from a single source in a country "in the Western Hemisphere," Mr. Clough said, declining to be more specific. Network Solutions believes the flood of messages is a malicious attack because the sender has since modified the originating address for the e-mail attacks slightly, making it difficult to simply screen the messages. ...
