Dave -- Hank Katz is a lecturer in our Department.  He recently retired from
a career in the DoD.  He has had a long involvemtn with Fortran and
served on some of the standardization committees.  Tim

42 years ago, this date, the first Fortran compiler was released.
IBM shipped it on tape to Westinghouse-Bettis in Pittsburg to
aid them in the design of nuclear  power reactors.

It was to rujn on an IBM 704, which had 4K of RAM and three
CPU registers.
