Subject: Implication of Deep Blue

Dave,

In a world in which there is a super abundance of data, pattern
recognition is an essential survival skill. The teams [cultures] with
the best pattern recognition will have a superior ability to make useful
maps of the dynamic fitness landscapes we must all navigate safely for
success. Better maps translates to more power: better maps keep you
higher on the fitness landscape.

The new reality is that those with the most money will have the best data
bases and best pattern mining technologies. Once again capital becomes a
barrier to entry and a barrier to power. Just as the capital expense of
owning a printing press created 'press barons' and the capital
requirements of radio, movies and television have create the media moguls
of today.

The result appears to be that the new media destroy the barriers to the
old media, but create even higher barriers to their own fruits.

Deep Blue demonstrates that a new and major barrier to power has arrived.
Who amongst us can afford the technology to compete with the pattern
recognition of Deep Blue's technology.

So once again, those without capital are left to sink ever faster into
the deep blue sea.

This has important implications, by the way, for information warfare and
suggests a modernization of the Willy Sutton maxim: because that is where
the patterns are. Centers for database driven pattern mapping will
become preferred targets for attacks. They will have very high value pay
offs.

Regards,

Jock
