WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS AT 64 kbps WITH GSM

For the first time ever, applications for wireless Internet
access at 64 kbps via GSM have been demonstrated under real
conditions. The live multislot GSM demonstration, which was
organised by Telia Mobitel and Telia Research in co-operation
with Ericsson, took place at Telekomdagarna in Stockholm on 21
May, 1996.

High transmission speeds are the key to the long-awaited
breakthrough in accessing the Internet's World Wide Web and
videoconferencing using the GSM standard. The Stockholm
demonstration was the result of close collaboration in
development work between Telia Mobitel and Ericsson, and proof of
the potential for development that GSM holds.

Today, mobile telephone operators all over the world are facing
high subscriber expectations regarding data communication. Both
Ericsson - as a supplier of technology - and Telia Mobitel are in
the forefront.

GSM is specially well suited for multimedia services that include
the transmission of sound, pictures and video. Ericsson and Telia
play an active role in the international standardisation work
being carried out to enable the introduction of high-speed data
transmission, known as High Speed Circuit Switched Data, via GSM.

Higher data transmission speeds will be successively introduced
in existing GSM networks to keep pace with demand, and mobile
telephone subscribers will be offered data communication at
speeds from 19.2 and 28.8 kbps, right up to 64 kbps and above.

"Our joint demonstration at Telekomdagarna showed how
future-proof GSM technology is, and emphasised Ericsson's leading
role as a GSM supplier. It also illustrated how forward-looking
mobile telephone operators such as Telia Mobitel are in
developing this digital standard to create new ways of competing
in the future," says Olle Kdllstrvm, product manager for data
communication applications at Ericsson Radio Systems in Kista.

"Telia Mobitel is working together with Ericsson to develop
technology that will achieve higher speeds in mobile telephony as
more and more applications such as multimedia require it. The mix
of still pictures, video, text, and sound requires higher
transmission speeds," says Fredrik Landahl, who is responsible
for business development at Telia Mobitel.

"We see mobile units being used as part of a LAN environment as
an obvious development in company communications. Many companies
are now looking at intranet solutions for internal communication.
Intranet is based on the Internet, and Telia Mobitel together
with Telia Telecom Services have produced one of Sweden's first
professional Internet solutions - Metafor - that provides
internal information to their staff via a nationwide network,"
says Fredrik Landahl.

Ericsson has supplied GSM systems to 43 countries and is a world
leader in GSM equipment.

Ericsson's 85,000 employees are active in more than 100 countries.
Their combined expertise in switching, radio and networking makes
Ericsson a world leader in telecommunications.
