Dear DFSers,

I found these tidbits in the evening editions of the papers over the
weekend....

(A) In the academic year ending May 1995, Japanese students in
America totaled 45,300, the largest number of students from any
country. It was the first time Japanese students topped the oryugakuo
list since the survey began in 1949. Japanese students now make up
one in ten of all foreign students studying in the US. By way of contrast ,
in the academic year ending May 1994 (the last year for which data is
available) the number of US students studying in Japan was only 2200.

(B) At a speech on November 17, Larry Summers was quoted
to have said, 'I take a different position than my friends James
Fallows and Eisuke Sakakibara, who believe that Japanese-style
managed capitalism is the correct economic strategy to pursue. ...
They stress that the US has much to learn from Asian capitalism, and
that importing US-style thinking would be a mistake. ... The lesson of
the past few years is that Japan must put more emphasis on gaining
wealth via deregulation, liberalization, and relaxation of control.'

I wonder if there is a correlation between (B) and (A). Hmmm.......

(apologies to James Fallows 'cause I keep needling his friend).
