To: Recipients of conference <loka-fastnet () igc apc org> Last Friday the Senate Republican caucus announced a reorganization plan which calls for total elimination of the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). Not coincidentally, perhaps, they have converted the House Science, Space and Technology Committee to the Technology and Competitiveness Committee, and it looks like they are about to try to relaunch Star Wars with chemical lasers in space (something OTA might have questioned). Does anybody care about saving OTA? Should some kind of campaign be launched, since this is the only agency in government (and really in the world)**** that is supposed to look at the long-term implications of technologies? If interested, reply via "FASTnet () apc org" or directly to me ("nvig () carleton edu"). Norm Vig, Professor of Political Science, Carleton College, Northfield, MN 55057.
