This also happened to me while I was running redhat. My friend thought it would be funny to exploit my box using a pop2 
exploit. Then he used a crontab exploit to gain root.
I am not shure if this is what happened to you... but you can check it out.
The stuff he used on me was the pop2 exploit and the crontab exploit.
