I still think my solution is the best.

Parties do not elect their presidential candidates, only nominate them. The population votes for all the presented candidates from all parties.

with the Top three highest voted candidates (party irrelevant) now entering the ring, gladiatorial combat ensues - to the death. Four years later the president must again defend his title from a new batch of challengers.

house and senate remain pretty much the same, however any citizen has the right to challenge them in single combat for their position once every three months. terms are otherwise unlimited.

Hey, it might not be a perfect form of government, but at least it will have rich privileged people dying for their beliefs, instead of poor folks sacrificing themselves for the same.
