So two things here; first, this was BBS not the FTP protocol and second,
this wasn't an "appliance" handling the scanning, like the TM patent
says. Again, having a second machine do it instead of the actual server
is hardly novel or new. In fact, one could argue that on the larger BBS
of the early 90's, they *did* have multiple machines working together,
and one would handle the file uploads, scan the files, etc, before
passing it to another to be hosted for download.

Changing gears here...

Oddly enough, I used to participate in the Fido Virus discussion
groups in the late 80's -- which is how I managed to eventually
meet Dr. Solly, Vess, Sarah Gordon, Ross, Aryeh, Dmitry, etc.
at various various conferences and other sundry functions.

In those days, it was either a UUCP account to gateway to BITNET
(e.g. for RISKS and other ACM forums) or Fido gateway for real
discussion with the grassroots.

Yes, I used to a lot of BBS'ing.

My career took my in a different direction over the course of the
subsequent years, but apparently things have a tendency to reconverge,
as the case may be.

Ah, good times. ;-)
