In a lot of cases, they really do not have much of a choice.  If the demand
for a given product is price-inelastic, they can afford to hire legals, pay
the higher wage, and pass the cost along in the price of the product.

However, if the demand is price-elastic, they can't do that - if they try to
raise the price, their sales drop off, often with disastrous results to the
balance sheets.  See the US steel and clothing/textile industries for
examples of what higher labor costs can do to your company.

And even if in the microeconomic area, they can afford to hire legals and
pass the cost along, the macroeconomic effects may be a problem.  In
particular, the higher costs will have an inflationary effect....
