I have to agree with you on all your points Andrew.

We have VMWare ESX Server running on 2 hosts, each with loads of mem and CPU
power. Each host runs 10+ boxes without issue (we have run all 22 on 1 host
and there was still space for more). We have been choosing them carefully,
only picking mainly under-used systems and sticking them on.

We have come up with a costing model too. So when we get asked "can we
borrow a server for 1 month" we can create a new server from a template in
about 20 minutes and charge them for its usage.

We run production, test, dev and QA servers all in VMware ESX. We havent
looked back since. With the addition of the latest features, it makes it
even easier to keep those boxes up. You can VMotion the machine across
hosts, and now you can move the disks without powering the box down (in both
cases you lose 1 ping to the server). Hard to beat.
