RE: Surveillance works

Success has many fathers. So it is not surprising that we have lots of
folks claiming they helped out in the arrest of alledged plotters. The
Pakistani's and NSA are two examples. However, given that almost all of the
people were arrested are from the UK, the tipster story and good police work
by Brits makes a whole lot of sense. The NSA and the Pakistani government
were likely brought pretty late into the game:

The British say their inquiry began months ago - prompted by a tip from
within the British Muslim community after the bloody July 7, 2005, terror
bombings of the London transit system, The Washington Post reported

A suspected British al Qaeda operative arrested in Pakistan has been
pinpointed as a key person in the plot to blow up as many as 10
transatlantic airliners.

Rashif Rauf was seized by Pakistani intelligence who had monitored his
telephone calls and e-mails after a tip-off from Britain's secret services.

"He is a British citizen of Pakistani origin. He is an al Qaeda operative
with linkages in Afghanistan," Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao
said.

Britain's MI-5 intelligence service and Scotland Yard had been tracking the
plot for several months, but only in the past two weeks had the plotters'
planning begun to crystallize, senior U.S. officials tell TIME. In the two
or three days before the arrests, the cell was going operational, and
authorities were pressed into action. MI5 and Scotland Yard agents tracked
the plotters from the ground, while a knowledgeable American official says
U.S. intelligence provided London authorities with intercepts of the group's
communications.

Actually, the british authorities were tipped off by a muslim

If they had pissed off their muslim communities, they would never have
gotten the tip,

I've not read that as being the dominant source anywhere. Both the UK
and Pakistan (who picked up several of the same "ring") appear to have
gotten a great deal of information from the US' NSA. And the
information sharing between US agencies to make this happen has been
highly praised.

But, hey, maybe you have better sources than the stories I've read...
