Well, that's one of the things that makes lasers interesting.

There's very few uses of lasers where the "in phase" actually matters
(their use in polishing large astronomical mirrors comes to mind, but
nothing else does.  Maybe some photomicrolithography applications...

Doesn't holography depend on it too?  Or is that all about photons
interfering with themselves?
