I remember touring an anti-spyware company and seeing 500MB txt files with nothing but CC#'s, SSN's, MMN's, etc. all over the place. This is nothing special or new. Judging from the fact that this "report" is following another FUD that says 87% of boxes is _infected_ with spyware makes me think Webroot has waaaay to many employees and needs to find a way to pay them. ~600+ employees do the job that sunbelt accomplishes with ~125. Webroot needs some FUD to increase sales, and it looks like the media is happy to go along. I guess I really dont mind as long as the end result is less infected boxes sending me spam, etc ;-) -JP
The FBI is investigating the stolen information, which was discovered on a password-protected FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server in the U.S. and is believed to be connected to a Trojan horse that is installed from the Web site teens7(dot)com. The information, organized by country, includes names, phone numbers, social security numbers, and user log-ins and passwords for tens of thousands of Web sites, according to information provided to InfoWorld by Webroot. The discovery is just the latest evidence of rampant identity theft by online criminals who use malicious Web sites, common software vulnerabilities and keylogging software to harvest information from unsuspecting Web surfers.
