I was just pondering as to how they will serve advertisements, ads on I.M. isn't the done thing and I can't see it being accepted. Honestly, I think a targetted ad would be pretty good on I.M., I'm talking about a concert with a friend and *bam* up pops a link to cheap tickets for that concert. But I can't see them getting away with that, I suppose it will just be used as a draw to their Gmail service? On 8/24/05, Stuart Carter <Stuart.Carter () bbcel co uk> wrote:
Google will make money off it the way they usually do - by providing a useful service, based on open source and open standards, and use it as a conduit to deliver advertising :) I hadn't thought of the Skype connection - but it *does* make sense when you think about it. Plus, it's another poke in the eye to Microsoft - "hey, Microsoft! We have just launched our IM service and already have more users than you! Neener neener!" (or something along those lines). How could they possibly make a profit off this? I guess it's just an extension to gMail which they will certainly make a profit with. Perhaps they're trying to beat skype on the VOIP market?
