Subject: [Full-disclosure] Windows Update

Went to windows update last night w/ XP Pro.
Redirected to the v5 version. I was asked to install
the new Windows Update software...downloaded the WU
software...copied the files...then saw
registering...kinda thinking that it was checking for
a valid registration or license. No updates needed
according to WU. XP SP2 is not available via WU for
XP Pro yet.

Now, I checked the Automatic Update service to see if
it was turned back start automatic as I always have it
disabled. Yup, it was set to automatic and it was
started. I stop and disable automatic update service,

I got this. I don't like automatic update. Remember the March 23 2002 update that stuffed a lot of XP and W2K machines across the world? I had to restore from an image I had made, fortunately two days earlier.

To get XPSP2 I simply downloaded the 277megs manually. You can leave auto update off. Go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

and at the right at the top of the screen is a "download" button to click. 277megs later, you just manually execute the exe you just downloaded.

The only prob I had was I wanted XP firewall ON with ZA Pro firewall ON at the same time. XP SP2 firewall was blocking - but telling me - ZA Pro firewall so I simply told it to "unblock" it and all was OK. Also, "Gearsec" doesn't work without downloading new drivers (I have an ATI Radeon video card on one machine and a SIS 630/730 on the other). Downloaded new drivers for the Radeon and downloading the other now as I type. The new drivers fixed Gearsec.

Apart from that, no other broken programs nor are there any problems really. Smooth update but then I waited until they officially shoved the public release up for download so I could see what I and my customers were about to face.

Greg.
