99.9 percent of all issues that are being blamed on the ZA software and it seems as if people are just unwilling to even believe for a second that maybe, just maybe it is their own ineptitude that has caused the problem. I have used ZA since the very beginning, and I have yet to have one of these so called catastrophic failures. I install and uninstall programs on an almost daily basis, and yes mother I do visit some not so savory sites. I am in total agreement that a hardware appliance built specifically for the job at hand is better, but to trash a product just because a few well meaning but under achievers say it is bad is rubbish. For ease of install, and ease of use, ZA is as good or better than any of the other software firewalls out there. By the way, I use a hardware appliance firewall, built just for the purpose of being a firewall. Not everyone out there has the time or patience to learn the various flavors of open source. And yes I also run ZA Pro on all of the boxes behind the firewall. No problems, no issues. Just smooth surfing. -----Original Message----- From: Michael Reilly [mailto:michaelr () cisco com] Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 3:46 PM To: Schmehl, Paul L Cc: Ben Tyson-Norrman; full-disclosure () lists netsys com Subject: Re: [Full-disclosure] Zone Alarm I agree. Use a router or a Unix/Linux box as a firewall if possible. If you want/need to run firewall SW on your PC then I'd put zone alarm about 3rd or 4th on the list of good ones to use. It has a number of problems with various applications, causing those applications to mis-behave (sometimes crash). For this reason I've "upgraded" to another SW firewall on those machines which need to run their own firewall. (I am not the only one having this problem with Zone Alarm - others in my group have also encounter problems and switched). michael On Wed, 4 Jun 2003 12:52:02 -0500 "Schmehl, Paul L" <pauls () utdallas edu> wrote:
I'm not sure why you'd expect derision for that question. I'd be more likely to give it to you for using HTML email. :-) Zone Alarm is fine for a home user on the Internet. It's certainly better than putting an unprotected Windows box out there. I'd personally prefer a DSL router or a *nix box running a "real"
firewall,
but ZA is fine for most people. Who's the "everyone" who say that ZA is crap? Zone Alarm, is it really as crap as everyone makes out.... or is the usual posturing by ill-informed...? _______________________________________________ Full-Disclosure - We believe in it. Charter: http://lists.netsys.com/full-disclosure-charter.html
