Not really, there are 3 choices for rule downloads:

http://www.snort.org/rules/

    *  Subscribers receive real-time rules updates as they are available * Learn more about subscription highlights here
    * Registered users can access rule updates 5 days after release to subscription users.
    * Unregistered users receive a static ruleset at the time of each major Snort Release

Becoming a Registered user costs nothing.

The 3 types are:
 Sourcefire VRT Certified Rules - The Official Snort Ruleset (subscription release)
- Costs money

 Sourcefire VRT Certified Rules - The Official Snort Ruleset (registered user release)
- Free

 Community Rules

I am suprised that there has been very little comment on the changes over
at www.snort.org , I would have thought that $195 a month for Snort
signatures would have made a few peoples blood boil!
