Christopher, I was somewhat involved with Plan 9 back in the early 90's, at Harvard. It is certainly redesigned from the ground up, but based on many of the same principles and reuses a lot of the same bases and paradigms--just as Linux was. It is most definitely Unix based. It has gone way beyond Unix, in totally different directions. It had wide distributed processing built in well before the Seti@home project made it popular, for example. In addition, I have toured the facilities where the Pix was/is developed, and talked to the key people involved (here in Athens). That's why I have such a respect for the Pix and its future. BTW, you provided an incorrect URL. Here is what you meant to provide (I believe): http://plan9.bell-labs.com/sys/doc/ Let me quote you a bit of the docs you don't seem to have read: "The early catch phrase was to build a UNIX out of a lot of little systems, not a system out of a lot of little UNIXes... The problems with UNIX were too deep to fix, but some of its ideas could be brought along..." Sounds like a unix-based os to me. Not unix, but undeniably unix-based. -- -- --Patrick Darden Internetworking Manager -- 706.354.3312 darden () armc org -- Athens Regional Medical Center On Tue, 12 Sep 2000, Christopher Nielsen wrote:

Plan9 does contain some of the ideas that originated with UNIX, but it is a completely rearchitected OS. Go read the papers at http://plan9/bell-labs.com/sys/doc/ Where did you read/hear that the PIX runs Plan9?
