i assume you are speaking of ethernet (or similar way) connected machines,
then the problem is that you need an ip-address to authenticate the user
to the logon-server. If it were ppp authentication is done before the ip-layer
is brought up.

i can think of 2 ideas,
1) use pppoe (PPP over Ethernet) to assign user ip addresses
2) assign ip addresses on a dummy network, then force the user to
establish a PPTP tunnel to a router.
