hi,
  FWIW i like to understand it in very simple terms as a 
go between two parties period.. or on behalf of one to 
many or many to one virtually mapped object. .. middleman
per se that acts on behalf of.. well you get my meaning.
i see it simply something like a squid server spun around 
in reverse.. or fwtk in reverse sort of speak .. hi marcus;-))
terminology at times can say less clearly rather than more 
clearly which i think is the intention;-}) since i have not 
tinkered with clustering technology i can't comment beyond 
but that is how i perceive it as reverse proxying so that 
the cluster appears as a single virtual server that way when
one system fails it is pulled out of the cluster and to
the outside world nobody ;-/) is inconvenienced. 
(it is intended to make the sum greater than the parts IMHO)
but then again it is just that..
