So, we have two choices.  Accept that the meaning of DMZ has evolved
into meaning a less-protected leg of a firewall.  Or be more precise
but less picturesque.

Hmm. How about if we call a public network at a corporation or enterprise
which is the buffer or perimeter LAN where said corporation or enterprise
keeps its publicly available servers -- Web, DNS, mail relays, proxies,
etc. -- and is behind firewall protection (e.g. as the 3rd interface off
of the enterprise Internet firewall) a 'protected DMZ' ( as opposed to
a 'hot LZ' of course :-).
