Thank you to everyone who has sent suggestions to this problem.

  We had tried checking/setting the duplex options and replacing cables.

  I have now installed the Sun *hme* patch and it seems to be doing
fine, but there is an intermittent quality to the problem so I am not
going to swear that it is fixed yet.
