Do not dismiss PPTP just because of IPSEC. PPTP is a Layer 2 forwarding protocol. As such you can encapsulate things other than IP over it (IPX and NetBEUI come to mind). And in fact work on it is very well alive within the IETF. Check out the Point-to-Point Protocol Extensions working group. They got drafts for the Layer Two Tunneling Protocol.
