Re: New Employee Security Training

For several years, Davidson has used new employee training as the venue for this. It’s been a collaboration between IT
and our Registrar’s office with a focus on topics like FERPA and data, as well as risks of phishing and other common
challenges.

In the coming academic year we will be looking to augment this with broader training on a range of IT security
concepts, probably focusing at the departmental/unit level. Besides administrative users, we’re also going to be
targeting students from a lifelong learning frame around personal IT security, personal data security, and privacy.
(This is analogous to outreach efforts the college already does, e.g., with seniors to help them with personal
financial concepts.)

As with all things security, defense in layers…. :-)

Subject: [SECURITY] New Employee Security Training

Does anyone do IT security training as part of on-boarding new employees? If so, what do you cover? Who does the
training (IT, HR, or?)? When is the training done? How well does it seem to work for you? What would you do differently?

We would like to implement something like this, but are afraid of overwhelming a new employee during their HR
orientation. Something done a week or two later may have a better chance of sticking with the end user, but requires
much more time and organization on our part.
