MFA: Duo and Google 2-Step Deployments Compared

How does your MFA project change as you scale up from select high-risk applications (direct deposit, W-2s) to email and
LMS, and from opt-in to mandatory for all staff? How do you engage with nontechnical users and senior campus
leadership? If your small college has standardized on the Google (or Microsoft) cloud, can you use their "free" MFA for
InCommon and other SAML services, or is something like Duo your only choice?

Carleton College has been slowly increasing Duo MFA enrollment since 2011, and St. Olaf College set an April 10th
deadline for all staff to enroll in Google 2-Step -- with Moodle and other "local" campus services in scope at both
campuses. Although they use different technologies, they share an Information Security Officer (Rich Graves) and a
common training program. A cross-campus information security committee helped shape the program. This presentation will
focus on user-facing and governance-facing issues encountered.
