50Mbit/s is more than a small group of gamers need to play online games in general. They typically don't use much bandwidth. However any time you try to get a group of people together to play a game some of them invariably need to download the game, get an update, etc. before they can play. Having a couple people download a 20Gig game or update over a "slow" internet connection can be very frustrating as the group waits for them. So from that perspective 50Mbit/s seems reasonable. I'm not sure what home internet connections are like in your area, but where I am at, 100Mbit/s home connections are common so it would sound slow to me as a student to share a 50 Mbit/s connection with other people when I can get twice that speed at home. My guess is that if you gave them a lot of bandwidth, they may use it in spikes while downloading a game and then the traffic would drop off to something much much lower.

Another possible reason to need more bandwidth would be for streaming gameplay. This is probably not something the group is asking for but is popular. Lots of people will set up a system for them to capture their screen and mic and then stream that to twitch.tv for others to watch. Or the reverse of that is something I have done which is to tune into someone else's live game stream and have that playing on a TV while my friends and I also play the game.

Anyway, the short answer is that the request for 50Mbit/s does not sound unreasonable and I'm sure they are happy that you are doing what you can to accommodate their request :)

    Thanks,

Definitely an isolated network, they desire and we would agree this would be a BYOD computer, on the fence with allowing third party switch/hub/routers, they are asking for 50mb rate limit, at first blush is seems high.
