Re: gamer clubs

We try to find the right balance between protecting our network, but allowing for the activity.  We have several 
gaming-themed student organizations and recognize that if we partner with them to accomplish what they want (with 
restrictions), they will continue to keep us in the loop.  They are greatly enhancing student life, and we try not to 
forget that.

Okay, serious answer -- it depends.

We had a similar request come up about ten years ago and carved out a section of our network as a DMZ for them. They 
had five or six systems that students managed and ran as game servers. Our networking team had specific port 
restrictions but, for the most part, they were able to run what they wished (rate limited and couldn't connect back to 
campus).

The reservation was that if there were any questions about misuse then the entire segment was downed until the 
questions were resolved and, as a formal club, the ultimate responsibility for activity there rested on their faculty 
or staff advisor. That was some ten years ago and we've never had to shut that segment down.

I'd suggest to meet with them, see exactly what they want/need and try to find a solution. As long as the activity fits 
within other guidelines, I think it can be a great educational opportunity.
