InCommon Certificate Service: Three Case Studies

The July IAM Online will present three case studies on the InCommon Certificate Service. Speakers from three different
institutions will discuss their experiences with the service and the types of certificates they use.

  * The University of Minnesota was an early adopter and will discuss the institution’s cost savings, use of
delegated administration, and other benefits as well as “gotchas”

  * The University of Rochester will share their experience, including the use of client certificates for signing
email

  * NCSA will discuss using IGTF certificates for international interoperability by XSEDE, a virtual system that
scientists use to interactively share computing resources including supercomputers, data archives, and other research
infrastructure

The new program manager for the service, Paul Caskey, will also provide an overview of the current state of the service
and plans for the future.

The InCommon Certificate Service is a community-operated service formed in 2011 to provide unlimited certificates for
all domains owned by a campus for one annual fee with central and delegated management. The service includes SSL,
extended validation (“green bar”), client (also called “personal”), code signing, and other types of certificates.

Speakers:

Jim Basney, National Center for Supercomputing Applications (and XSEDE)

Christopher Bongaarts, University of Minnesota

Kevin Jesse, University of Rochester

Lisa Sprague, University of Rochester

Moderator: Paul Caskey, Internet2
