Network Engineer position at Northwestern

Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) is searching for an experienced (5-7 years) network engineer to 
join our Telecommunications and Network Services team.  The network engineering team within TNS is responsible for all 
infrastructure having to do with IP networking on the US campuses of Northwestern University.  This includes routers, 
switches, firewalls, load balancers, optical networking, wireless access points/controllers, DNS/DHCP/NTP servers, 
RADIUS authentication servers, various database/web servers, and lots of other various cool stuff.  

While all of the network engineers are expected to be able to deal with all of the above to various degrees, there are 
areas of specialization within the team, with each engineer being designated as a subject matter expert for a few 
technologies and services.  For this specific case, we are looking for someone who has experience in the security realm 
to be able to deal with things like firewalls, Network Admission Control systems, Intrusion Prevention Systems, and VPN 
concentrators.  Specific vendors currently include Juniper, Cisco, Palo Alto, Bradford, and Aruba.  This person will 
also work closely with NUIT’s Information Systems and Security/Compliance team, which is tasked with formulating 
security policy and day to day security operations.  

The ideal candidate will have had exposure to a higher education environment or at least be cognizant of the issues and 
philosophies that are encountered in higher ed vs. what is seen in most corporate IT environments.  Familiarity with 
multiple operating systems and the security implications of various OS’s will also be a big plus.  The ability to 
manage multiple streams of information/communication effectively is a must, as well as being able to communicate 
effectively with users from a wide range of disciplines and IT skill levels.
