Open DNS and OpenDNS in this case are not one in the same. From a Paul
Vixie in the comments:

"Rather, we’re solving internet public safety problems. As long as you can
run your own recursive name server (and 85% of you who do this are using
our free BIND software to do it!), *or you can reach well-monitored open
recursive servers like google’s or opendns’s, or you can reach the
recursive dns servers operated for you by your ISP, then you’re doing fine*.
we won’t try to remove any “useful services”."

Subject: [SECURITY] OpenDNS Users

Does anyone use the DNS service OpenDNS, either the free version or the
purchased product called Umbrella, for their campus DNS service? If so I’d
appreciate it if you could provide your thoughts on service. Or info if you
are using another similar product.

- How long have you used OpenDNS?

- Have you seen a reduction in phishing attempts and/or malware
on your campus network?

- Have you seen any difference with performance?

- Are you using the free or purchased version?

- Any other thoughts or comments?

Thanks very much,
Greg
